Juvenile Boys Win Championship in Dramatic Fashion

  The Juvenile Boys Basketball team completed their dream season with a thrilling 48-47 win over archrival Maimonides to take the Div III Championship banner in front of a packed house at VMC on Wednesday.  The Rams finish the season with an impressive 15-1 record, their only loss was at home  to Maimonides following the Christmas break.  VMC had earlier won at Maimonides, setting up a furiously contested final to establish once and for all which team was this year's best.

  VMC came out firing on all cylinders, riding the energy of the home crowd and storming to a 21-6 lead by the end of the first quarter.  Michael Napoletano set a blistering pace, and Anthony Evangelista poured in 15 of his game-high 23 points in the first frame.  Maimonides was clearly shaken, missing 7 of 8 free throws in the second quarter, and at the half VMC still held an impressive 30-17 lead. 

  Maimonides started the second half with a 3-pointer, signalling they were not done just yet, and sure enough, they stormed back, dominating the third quarter and cutting the lead to just 5 points with all the momentum now favouring the visitors.  Their  large contingent of fans who made the trek to the East End were once more raising the volume, setting up a nailbiting final quarter.  Maimonides continued to roll, and at the end of an 8 point run were now ahead by 3.  The teams traded baskets and VMC took back the lead with under two minutes to play.  Maimonides hit a three-pointer to get within one with seconds remaining, but with the crowd in a frenzy, VMC held on for the hard-fought victory.

  The fact that VMC held MAI to 47 points, well below their scoring average, is a testament to how much of a factor total team defence is in the success of Massey' season, not only in the final.  Every member of this team was committed from day one to play as a team, more than any of the boys' teams in recent years.  The banner is their reward, and it is well-deserved.  Maimonides must also be congratulated for a great season, an amazing effort in the final game that easily could have been won by either team, and for the class they showed in defeat despite the heated nature of the rivalry between these two teams this year.  Special congratulations must also go out to Michael Napoletano, whose leadership on and off the court has been outstanding, and without whose ability to control a game and get his teammates involved we would not have had anywhere near the success we have enjoyed.  Also, Anthony Evangelista deserves recognition for his contribution in scoring, rebounds and blocks that have frustrated opponent after opponent all year, none moreso than MAI on this day, resulting in him being chosen MVP for the final game.

  Aside from returning center Carlo Petrone, the entire Rams squad is graduating this year, kicking off a rebuilding process that will hopefully get the team back to this point in the not-too-distant future.  To Michael Napoletano, Anthony Evangelista, Giordano Cescutti, Jaimin Patel, Rahul Patel, Fabrizio Mancuso, Paolo Addona, Michael Del Vecchio and the most recent recruit, Gabriel Zappatelli, I would like to say that it has been an absolute pleasure to coach you as a group.  You are a good team, but more importantly, you are good people, and I wish you all future happiness and success.  I also hope that you, like the past players who came to see your victory, will continue support VMC basketball, come to practice when you can, and help build the sense of community that has been growing over the past few years  within the Juvenile Boys Basketball team.  Our next game, and the next part of this process, will be the upcoming alumni game.  Stay tuned for details to follow soon.

PED Day

Dear Parents,

March 26, 2010 will be a pedagogical day. The school calendar will not change - Monday, March 29 is still a Day 5.

For security and safety issues, all students will be required to enter and exit the school via the cafeteria door. Students will no longer be permitted to enter or exit the building via the front door. Please take this into consideration when dropping off and picking up your children.

Updates have been made to the Governing Board section of the web site.

Pee Wee Hockey Team Takes Over First Place in Division

After a difficult opening to the season, the Massey hockey team won five of its next six games, launching them into sole possession of first place in their division! Boasting one of the lowest goals against in the league, the team looks almost completely different from what it did when it lost the first two games of the year. Credit goes out to the unsung heroes like of the team - you know who you are - whose hardworking ways have finally rubbed off on team's scorers. There is still loads of work to be done if we're to win the championship we set out to win. Go Rams!

Juvenile Girls Basketball

The time for the Juvenile Girls basketball game against Marymount on Friday has been changed to 3:45. Early dismissal will be at 1:55. Good luck girls.
