Community Service 2010 – 2011

Vincent Massey Collegiate Mission Statement

The primary mission of the collegiate is to develop the well rounded student committed to academic achievement and a sense of community responsibilities.

Community service is a requirement for all secondary four students. In the coming weeks you will be given the opportunity to choose your place of community service. You will find a list of potential organizations on the VMC web site. If you are currently involved in volunteer work and you wish to continue you may do so if the volunteer experience meets with the VMC community service criteria. This organization must be approved by Mrs. Pasquini and you must have a supervisor who will be able to verify your attendance and the quality of service provided.

I would like to increase the opportunities for students to volunteer with people who have special needs ie: intellectually handicapped individuals, seniors who are shut away and lonely or people who are chronically ill. If you are interested in working with this clientele please let me know.

If you are connected with a group already ie: you are teaching Faith First or you sing in a church choir or you are a dancer or hockey player and you would like to offer your services to this group or if you would like to volunteer at your former elementary school and it is not currently on the list … please let me know.

Drop by to see me at Room 214

. If you do not come to speak with me I will not know what your needs are. I will post my schedule on the door of the SCA. I will be available on Thursday, Friday and every other Wednesday.

Steps Leading up to Sign Up for Community Service

You are required to choose at least two services by October 1st.

You will be allowed to officially sign up for a service beginning on Sept. 29th. You can do this by dropping by the room 214 during lunch hour, at recess or before school. The services have a limit on the number of students that they will accept. If you wish to volunteer in an after school daycare, keep in mind that priority will be given to the students who attended the elementary school.

Beginning and Ending Dates

Sign up – September 29 and 30 October 7 and 8th

      Begins week of October 18

      Ends week of April 11

      Absence- 3 excused absences

§  Inform supervisor ahead of time

§  2 excused abscences for sports (must come to get a form)

Duration of Community Service

In most cases the service will begin in October and end in April. You are required to spend at least an hour per week volunteering at the organization of your choice. There are a few exceptions to this format. I will discuss the schedule for these independent service arrangements with the students in question.

Letter of  Recommendation

Students who have done community service often request a letter attesting to their volunteer experience. This letter can make a difference when applying to a special program in university or for a scholarship.

Ethics and Religious Culture (evaluation)

You will be evaluated by the Spiritual Animator, your teacher and your supervisor. If you show up when you are expected (commitment). If you let your supervisor know if you are going to be absent and arrange for a make up time (responsibility). Show respect (politeness) and try to see how and where you can be helpful (initiative) then

you will have no worry when it comes to marks for Community Service.

I look forward to working with your class and I expect that you will carry on with the tradition of dedicated and responsible service to the organization of your choice.

Best Regards,

Mrs. Pasquini

Spiritual and Community Animator
